Apartments / May 16, 2018

Otherwise known as the 'Englishman's Beach', Playa del Ingles is not only one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan resorts in the Canary Islands, it is also one of the warmest and sunniest. Thanks to its sheltered location beneath Gran Canaria's towering mountains to the north, Playa del Ingles benefits from very mild winters and, as a result, attracts large numbers of visitors all year round.

The Yumbo Centre

Playa del Ingles is particularly gay friendly, and is the home of the renowned Yumbo Centre, which opened in 1982 and a leading leisure and entertainment complex. During the day, the centre attracts large numbers of families, who can choose from more than 200 shops, restaurants and bars. At night, Yumbo offers an eclectic mix of lively nightclubs, open-air bars and live performances, and is the perfect place for families, couples and groups of friends to chill. Although much of the nightlife is geared towards LGBT travellers, the centre welcomes all visitors, and remains open well into the early hours.

The Dunes of Maspalomas

Adjacent to Playa del Ingles is probably Gran Canaria's most famous natural landmark: the Dunes of Maspalomas, which are almost like a miniature Sahara Desert. The dunes, which are overlooked by the striking 19th-century Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse, are next to the desirable resort of Maspalomas, which contains the island's largest golf course and plenty of other luxury hotels and elegant restaurants.

Day trip suggestion: Pico de las Nieves

Gran Canaria's highest peak, Pico de las Nievas is almost 1, 950m high and can be accessed by car. From the mountain, you can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding forests and coastline, before driving to the entrance of the path to the Roque Nublo landmark, a series of striking rock formations.

Other things to do at Playa del Ingles

If you're up for a challenge, take part in some windsurfing at the PRO Surfing Gran Canaria, Pro Surfing Company or Surf Canaries Surf school clubs. You might also want to spend some time at the Eiffel Bar or Mystique Bar, two of the most popular and charming bars of the Yumbo Centre, or feel free to sunbathe on Playa del Ingles' fantastic sandy beach.

Hotel and restaurant ideas

For excellent value for money Playa del Ingles hotels, consider booking a stay at the stylish, contemporary Hotel Green Field or IFA Buenaventura Hotel, or choose the exquisite, high-end Hotel Riu Palmeras / Bung Riu Palmitos. For delicious and authentic Spanish cuisine, head to Mana 264, or visit the Restaurante Calma Chicha if you're a big fan of Spanish, Mediterranean and fusion cuisine. Other superb Playa del Ingles restaurants include the Indian-themed Rico Ricco restaurant and the Italian-themed Astoria Drink E Food.
